July 21, 2002 Latest Update
The root of Freddy Garcia's troubles lately is that he's been throwing his changeup too hard. The first changeup he threw to Garrett Anderson on Friday night registered 87 MPH.
Pitching coach Bryan Price and Garcia made a rare day-after appointment for a bullpen workout. The big right-hander worked for about 15-20 minutes, spending most of the session working on his changeup. He also worked on his curveball. There is no need to panic about Garcia's recent struggles, and the fact that he's working on his problems makes it more likely that he'll break out of it. Source: Seattle Times

Latest update July 24, 2002
Garcia is 0-2 with a 6.46 in four starts.
"When Freddy is throwing the ball really well and having success," Mariners pitching coach Bryan Price said, "his change-up is in the 81-82 mile per hour range. He was in the 85-88 mph range again tonight and that's too hard."
No one in the Mariners camp is losing faith in Garcia. Price and manager Lou Piniella believe their ace will get his pitching repertoire working smoothly again and run off a streak of wins the way he did during a six-game winning binge from May 24-June 19 when he virtually became an All-Star for the second straight season.

"Freddy is not as sharp as he has been," Piniella said. "But he's always been a good pitcher and he is a good pitcher. He'll get better."
